Nadiv (meaning “generous” or “noble” in Hebrew) was a ground-breaking initiative that created exciting connections between camps and schools, leveraging unique skill sets and best practices for the benefit of both.
Funded by the Jim Joseph Foundation and the AVI CHAI Foundation, the program created six senior experiential Jewish educator positions to be shared by overnight camps and Jewish day/synagogue schools. Just as the nadiv, or nobility, created conduits between the nation’s well and the tribal location where our ancestors encamped, this program aspired to build synergy and collaboration in Jewish education. It strategically brought fresh and relevant content to future generations, as well as:
- Enhanced the quality of Jewish education at the participating camps with a sustainable new model;
- Increased the use of “informal” educational techniques at the participating schools;
- Creatde a new career path for select, talented educators.
Developed in partnership with the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), three Nadiv educators toggled their responsibilities between Reform nonprofit Jewish summer camps and day or synagogue schools in the following communities
- Atlanta (URJ Camp Coleman and Davis Academy)
- Northeast (URJ Crane Lake Camp and Temple Shaaray Tefila)
- Seattle (URJ Camp Kalsman and Temple De Hirsch Sinai)
The additional three positions were in community camps that were shared by three synagogues or day schools:
- Minneapolis (Herzl Camp and Heilicher Minneapolis Jewish Day School)
- Northeast (Camp Young Judaea Sprout Lake and Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County)
- San Diego (Camp Mountain Chai and San Diego Jewish Academy)
