Founded 110 years ago, Young Judaea is America’s oldest Zionist youth movement, turning Jewish youth of diverse backgrounds and orientations into engaged leaders and inspired activists with a life-long commitment to Israel, Jewish life and tikkun olam (repairing the world). Through immersive informal and experiential education, Young Judaea fosters a sense of value and love for Jewish tradition and ritual and pride in the Jewish people, Israel and being Jewish, while instilling a sense of stewardship for the world.
Camp Tel Yehudah, in Barryville, New York, is the national teen camp of Young Judaea and is preparing to celebrate its 75th summer. Tel Yehudah inspires Jewish and Zionist youth from around the world to experience and embrace the diversity of the Jewish people in a joyful and diverse community while training them to become leaders who effect positive change for the Jewish people, Israel and the world.
SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Young Judaea and Camp Tel Yehudah seek a creative, dynamic professional with strong educational, organizational and communication skills to serve as Director of Teen Education. In conjunction with the Director of Camp Tel Yehudah and the CEO of Young Judaea, the Director of Teen Education will be responsible for creating and implementing an educational vision and cohesive educational agenda consistent with the values of pluralism, Zionism, and social action that meet the needs of today’s teens. The Director of Teen Education will work closely with the manager of Year Round Programs, manager of Gesher – summer teen Israel program, and the Tel Yehudah summer educational team developing programs and professional development that relate to the year round educational arc. The Director of Teen Education will be a member of the senior management teams of Camp Tel Yehudah and Young Judaea and will be supervised by the Director of Camp Tel Yehudah.
In conjunction with senior leadership, develop a compelling educational vision consistent with the values of Young Judaea (pluralism, Zionism, social action) and the realities and needs of today’s American Jewish teens.
Develop and articulate a cohesive educational agenda based on this educational vision
Design and Implementation
Design and implement highly engaging programs for Jewish teens in summer camp and during short-term year round programs
Work with educators throughout the YJ ecosystem (YJ camps, Israel programs, Year Round, etc) to develop a coherent and consistent educational curriculum and approach
Work with Director of Tel Yehudah and CEO of Young Judaea Global to design an optimal cross-functional teen education team
Develop and implement engaging and effective professional development programs for staff of of all levels of experience
Provide oversight and supervision for Senior Manager of Year Round Teen Programs
Coordinate and provide direction for cross-functional teen education team
Superior ability to develop an overall compelling educational vision and cohesive educational agenda
Deep understanding of high-quality educational design and modalities of experiential learning
Strong knowledge of relevant content – Israel, Jewish literacy, Zionism, and social activism through a Jewish lens
Superior ability to design and implement engaging and high quality professional development for staff of all levels of experience
Strong understanding of the landscape of Jewish teens and programs, and current related research
Exceptional organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
Energetic, flexible, able to manage multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines at the same time
Ability to provide effective oversight and supervision both in person (ie summer camp) and remotely
Proven success with mobilizing highly effective teams (cross-functional teams preferred)
Ease working in pluralistic settings
RequirementsFive years experience in Jewish education including experiential and informal Jewish education
Highly successful performance in working with teens in a variety of educational settings
Track record of turning roadblocks into opportunities and creating meaningful organizational change
Significant experience with Jewish summer camping and experiential Jewish education
Masters degree or higher in Jewish education or related field
