Overview and purpose:

The Union for Reform Judaism and URJ Camp Harlam seek an experienced Associate Director to help grow, operate and lead Camp Harlam’s overall program towards achieving its mission and vision. Serving as a key partner to the Camp Director, the Associate Director will help create and implement the long-term strategy of achieving sustainable excellence by focusing on the creation and implementation of operational systems and processes, management of operational staff, leveraging of the facility and top-level hospitality to expand off-season business, supporting the ongoing recruitment and retention of campers by managing our prospect management efforts and leading our recruitment team, and overseeing our marketing and communications strategy.

The Associate Director will be in residence at URJ Camp Harlam during the summer months and will work out of the Bala Cynwyd, PA headquarters for the rest of the year. The Associate Director should expect to travel extensively as a representative of Camp Harlam. This will include trips to URJ events, staff and professional conferences, and for camper and staff recruiting and to the congregations served by the camp.

You can establish and implement systems and procedures that are “behind the scenes” with ease and can connect with a wide range of constituents no matter the initiative. You are a programmer and supervisor, and an effective recruiter of campers and staff. You apply a “whatever it takes” approach to your work and are ready to roll up your sleeves to help push Camp Harlam forward.

What you’ll do as the URJ Camp Harlam Associate Director:


– Year-Round: supervise Camp Harlam facilities staff team and possibly other full-time employees.

– Summer: partner with the Camp Director in creating summer supervision plan and maintain oversight of staff and supervisors in all operational areas (Health Center, Food Service, Housekeeping, AV/Operations, Office, Transportation, etc.).

Recruitment and Retention of Year-Round Program Participants and Campers

– Partner with Camp Director in setting strategy to meet and hopefully exceed recruitment goals for all programs and sessions throughout the year including local, regional, and North American gatherings. Coordinate and hold staff team accountable in these efforts.

– Develop and implement strategy for congregational partnerships and schedule, coordinate, and facilitate impactful and effective congregational visits throughout the region, home visits/parlor meetings, tours of camp, and other marketing and recruitment efforts.

– Coordinate partnership with specialty camps and other URJ summer programs with regard to holistic recruitment efforts.

Staff Recruitment, Development, Training, and Retention

– Responsible for the recruitment, marketing, and hiring of staff members, and the development of training and orientation, including the hiring and training of all seasonal support and operational staff.

– Develop and implement administrative intake processes, including contracting, health forms, background checks, etc.

· Programming

– Responsible for the operational functions (food, accommodations, administrative support) to support the program of visitation and special events at camp during the summer.

– Supervise portfolio of year-round programs, including congregational retreat programs, family camps, and more. Partner across the Camp Harlam team to ensure a high-level of success in programmatic implementation.

– Build other partnerships leading to the creation and execution of new year-round programs and engagement opportunities.


– Lead the creation and execution of policies and procedures and supervise staff to ensure Camp Harlam and its programs comply with ACA standards, URJ standards, and other state and municipal regulations.


– Develop and supervise implementation of summer and off-season marketing and communications strategy with all stakeholder audiences.

– Supervise the ongoing maintenance of all data management systems to ensure successful communications to stakeholder groups.


– At all times, maintain a complete and consistent presence as a leader within the community with respect to role modeling of institutional principles and Jewish values, supervision and accountability for all rules and procedures, and dedication in all respects to the organization’s mission and vision, including alignment with URJ policies and practices.

– Serve as a member of Camp Harlam’s professional team and partner with colleagues on projects.

– Assist in any and all areas of Camp Harlam’s management where you have valuable insight and experience to contribute.

Additional Responsibilities

– Accountable and responsible for day-to-day operation of camp in the Camp Director’s absence.

– Serve as a member of the URJ Youth System’s camp cohorts and its North American staffing team. Whenever possible, provide support and assistance to North American efforts and initiatives of the URJ Youth System and the URJ in general, and play an active, visible role on the regional and North American scene. This will include opportunities for professional development and training.


Qualifications and experience:

Ideal candidate has prior senior management and leadership experience (residential camping management experience a plus)

Experience as a successful business partner understanding organizational implications of all decisions

Proven experience working successfully in team-based settings

Highly developed project management skills, including the ability to move projects with various stakeholders forward with appropriate priorities

Experience in event management or operations, including, but not limited to, supervising staff, facilities, construction, transportation, hospitality and related functions

Knowledge of and commitment to the Reform Jewish movement and institutions

Outstanding communication skills, including the ability to speak and write clearly and accurately

Motivated to stay current in the areas of culture, teen issues, child development, Jewish education, etc.

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in a relevant field
