CAMP DIRECTOR, Full-time
Reports to Board of Directors/Central Shaliach
Camp Shomria is a resident Jewish summer camp. Located in Liberty, NY, the camp has a capacity of 200 boys and girls each summer.
The mission of Camp Shomria is to encourage youth to build progressive Jewish values, explore connections to Israel and the Jewish community, and develop a commitment to social, environmental and economic justice in a setting characterized by youth leadership and collective responsibility.
The Camp Director will help ensure that the mission and vision of the camp is carried out. This will be achieved through the development, implementation, supervision and evaluation of assigned core responsibilities. Central to the success of this position is the ability to develop mutually respectful relationships with campers, parents and staff.
Responsibilities of the Camp Director:
Reside on campus at Camp Shomria, Liberty, NY during the camp season, typically from June through August. Also, reside at camp for Peulat Stav weekend (late September/October), Mosh Choref (MLK Weekend winter camp, and Lag b’Omer (mid-May).
Plan, coordinate, oversee, implement and evaluate all aspects of Camp operations. This includes but is not limited to: recruitment of campers and non-counselor staff, staff training, coordination with site managers. Interface and coordinate with Central Shaliach/a, Education Shaliach/a Head Counselor (Rosh Moshava), and the youth leadership team.
Develop and implement a recruitment and retention plan to meet the budgetary enrollment goals.
Work with shlichim and youth leadership to develop programs that will keep the camp in the forefront of Jewish camps by soliciting feedback from camp families and staff
Manage and hire the administration and supervision of the year-round office and personnel
Supervise non-counselor staff in a manner consistent with the values of the camp. Ensure that staff is provided with feedback that results in a formal evaluation
Operate in a fiscally responsible manner consistent with Camp budget
Implement the Camp’s marketing and public relations program, which may include travel as needed. This aspect may include development of collateral materials, social media, and other channels to promote the Camp.
Coordinate and provide oversight for transportation, living accommodations, and other special and/or medical needs of campers and staff
Purchase required supplies for all aspects of the Camp
Interface with relevant agencies for required certifications or accreditation.
Work with the board and staff on fundraising opportunities and ensure that annual campaign and other fundraising requests are sent out in a timely manner.
Oversee social media.
Review, together with the Israeli emissaries (shlichim), camp educational and other programing for safety issues, appropriateness, and potential parental reaction.
Working together, when requested by the Israeli emissaries (shlichim) and the senior Hadracha, to help with the planning and execution of educational and other camp programming.
Qualities Sought in the Camp Director:
The overnight camp is a unique and exciting experience. The physical and emotional environment may present challenges.
Camp Director will be able to:
Identify and provide solutions to complex issues and concerns in a professional manner
Work under pressure, take direction, and work unaided on time-sensitive projects in an organized manner
Provide ongoing charismatic support to colleagues and other camp staff
Support and maintain a high level of customer service to camp families
Qualifications of the Camp Director:
Minimum B.A. from an accredited college or university
Experience in directing youth programs and/or camps in a residential setting
Knowledge of program development, with an understanding of camp programming and Jewish experiential education to create an overall outstanding camp experience
Background in Jewish camping or other Jewish educational experiences
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
Knowledge and commitment to “best practices” in the field
Social media knowledge/skills
Hebrew a plus
Salary commensurate with experience.
