Camp Shomria is a resident co-educational Jewish youth-led summer camp owned by Hashomer Hatzair, Inc. (Hashomer USA), the US branch of the world-wide Jewish Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair. Located in Liberty, NY, the camp has a capacity of 200 boys and girls. In addition to the summer camp, Hashomer USA offers year-round activities led by youth leaders and leadership programs for counselors and older teens. Hashomer USA’s main US office is located on West 33rd Street in NYC.

The mission of Hashomer Hatzair is to encourage youth to build progressive Jewish values, explore connections to Israel and the Jewish community, and develop a commitment to social, environmental and economic justice in a setting characterized by youth leadership and collective responsibility.

The Camp Director will report to the Board of Directors of Hashomer USA and the Central Shaliach/a, who is the representative of world Hashomer Hatzair in the United States. In addition to the Central Shaliach/a, the Camp Director is expected to work with the Education Shaliach/a, Head Counselor(s) (Rosh Moshava), the Mazkirut, the youth leadership team (Hanhaga), the counselors and the non-counselor professional staff.

The Camp Director will help ensure that the mission and vision of Hashomer Hatzair is carried out in the United States by fulfilling the following responsibilities:

*Recruitment and enrollment – develop and implement a recruitment and retention plan to bring young people to Camp Shomria and to the year-round activities. This may include participation in camp fairs and other events and could require some travel.
*Outreach and communication, using a variety of modes including social media, email and news media
*Develop and maintain relationships with all of the constituencies that are connected to Hashomer USA including parents, campers, counselors, staff, alumni, donors, world Hashomer Hatzair, other branches of Hashomer Hatzair (particularly Canada) and other organizations.
*Work with the Central Shaliach/a and the Finance Committee to develop Hashomer USA’s annual budget
*Expand the Family Camp program to expand use of the camp property and develop relationships with possible campers and their families
*Help plan and implement the Camp’s marketing and public relations program in coordination with the Outreach and Marketing Committee of the Board.
*Develop and implement programs in partnership with other organizations, such as the Rabin Memorial, to build Hashomer USA’s name in the camping and Jewish world
*Plan, coordinate, oversee, implement and evaluate all aspects of Camp operations in collaboration with the Central Shaliach/a:
*Reside at Camp Shomria during the camp season and for the two weeks preceding and following the camp for set up and dismantling.
*Reside at camp for 3 weekend gatherings with Hashomer USA members in the fall, winter and spring, and for any planned Family Camps
*Recruitment and supervision of non-counselor staff, staff training, coordination with site managers. Ensure that staff is provided with feedback that results in a formal evaluation
*Coordinate and provide oversight for transportation, living accommodations, and other special and/or medical needs of campers and staff
*Purchasing for all aspects of camp.
*Work with agricultural and farming experts to ensure Camp Shomria’s farming program is in place each year
*Coordinate with all relevant governmental and non-governmental agencies for required certifications or accreditation.
*Review, together with the Central Shaliach/a and Education Shaliach/a camp educational and other programming for safety issues, and appropriateness.
*Fundraising – work with the Board, alumni and the Central Shaliach/a on fundraising opportunities and ensure that annual campaign and other fundraising requests are sent out in a timely manner.
*Such other tasks as are necessary in order to ensure that Hashomer USA remains a strong and vibrant organization


Minimum B.A. from an accredited college or university
Management experience
Marketing, branding and audience building experience
Social media knowledge/skills
Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written English
Background in Jewish camping or other Jewish educational experiences
Knowledge and commitment to “best practices” in the field
Prior experience with youth-led organizations a plus
Hebrew a plus
Connections in the Jewish world a plus
Previous camp director experience a plus
