Camp Kayetz Director
Camp Kayetz is the joyous Temple Beth El day camp for campers aged 6 -12, CIT’s ages 13 –15.
There are usually 40 to 60 campers, with a counselor to camper ratio of 2 teens and 1 adult counselor per 20 kids.
We seek an enthusiastic and energetic director who lead and co-create a meaningful Jewish summer camp experience for campers. The director will supervise teen and adult counselors, communicate with families as needed, oversee and enrich day to day camp activities and trips. We seek someone with the ability to think on their toes and jump into all kinds of situations with the campers and teen counselors. This person must prioritize safety of all attending camp and be ready to act to ensure this as needed. The daily activities and staffing for Camp Kayetz for this summer are already largely in place, however the Director should be someone who is ready to step into the planning and get involved as soon as possible.
Camp Kayetz is located at Temple Beth El in Santa Cruz County, California. Temple Beth El is not able to cover re-location costs and seeks to attract candidates who live within commuting distance from our facility in Aptos, California.
RequirementsCamp Kayetz Director Duties Include
Supervise Assistant Director, staff and CITs
Co-create and coordinate schedules
Ensure well-being and safety of campers and staff
Ensure that all administrative work is completed
Create a Jewish framework for camp activities
Lead camp gatherings such as opening and closing circle
Participate in staff training program, co-lead aspects of training
Communicate with families and Temple Beth El staff
Monitor camp activities and implement improvements as needed
Attend and supervise field trips
Prepare for camp throughout next winter and early spring by helping create and budget, creating job descriptions and hiring and onboarding staff, and planning activities.
Camp Kayetz 2023 Dates: Counselor training/orientation: June 12-16
Camp in session: June 19-July 14 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Friday. No camp on July 4th.
It is a plus if the Camp Director has skill in teaching, the creation of Jewish curriculum, and song leading, but applicants are encouraged to apply even if they are not skilled in these areas.
The salary range for this position if $8,000-$9,000 depending on skill and experience.

Degrees in education, sociology, social work, psychology, HPER, Human Services or Community Youth Work.
Prior work with children ages 7 to 18, including roles as educator in an informal educational environment or classroom setting
Experience as Counselor, Unit Leader, or Head Counselor at a day or residential camp.
Proven skills to supervise creative scheduling and programs, and to supervise and evaluate staff.
Current CPR and First Aid certifications.
Experience as a youth group advisor and/or leader at a community center, college/university, or with a religious organization.
Skill and capacity for engagement and relationship building with both children and their parents.
Jewish experience including an understanding of Jewish concepts and values.
Ability to provide emotional support to a wide range of ages.
Experience with special needs students.
Planning, recruitment and marketing experience.
Computer Skills: proficiency in Microsoft applications including Microsoft word, excel, outlook, PowerPoint and database skills. Preferred knowledge of Zoom and ShulCloud a strong plus.
