The Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Camps and Immersives team seeks an experienced Camp Director to help to create communities of belonging that build confidence and character of young people, so they are inspired as leaders to make the world a better place and pursue lifelong engagement in Jewish life. A URJ camp director possesses the personal qualities, skill, and vision to lead a great Jewish experiential institution in North America.
The Director of 6 Points Creative Arts Academy (CAA) drives a vision of creating a camp experience for those with an existing passion for the arts who don’t want to choose between arts camp and Jewish camp! 6 Points Creative Arts Academy is a vibrant, fast-paced, communal living environment where young artists develop their passions and explore new skills. Through the integration of the Arts and Judaism, campers can be their whole selves in a warm, inclusive, like-minded community. CAA strives to create and offer fun, engaging activities and programs, nurturing life-long friendships, led by fantastic counselors that act as role models, living Jewish values.
CAA’s Director oversees a holistic and immersive summer experience with day-to-day oversight of the program, operations, recruitment, donor cultivation, and development of young people as confident leaders of self and others in partnership with lay and staff leaders across the URJ. Like all URJ camps, CAA is committed to providing affirming and safe communities for campers and families from a wide range of backgrounds, including Campers and Families of Color, LGBTQ+ identifying campers and families, campers and families with disabilities, and other marginalized and often underrepresented backgrounds. The director leads the camp team, connects with lay and professional stakeholders, and works across the organization to create a great experience for participants and families; engages internal and external partners across the URJ network to mobilize stakeholders towards social justice change; runs a smart business; recruits and cultivates an engagement pipeline; cultivates donors, alumni and lay leaders as ambassadors; and identifies and develops young people as leaders. The Director prioritizes sustainability and growth and fosters relationships with donors, alumni, and lay leaders as ambassadors. At all times, using a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion, the director will drive a vision that supports this work and is organizationally aligned.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
The Director of 6 Points Creative Arts Academy reports to Executive Director of 6 Points Specialty Camps and is responsible for the following:
URJ & CAMP LEADERSHIP
- Develop a holistic and compelling vision for 6 Points Creative Arts Academy that is connected to the URJ organizational priorities. Communicate vision and align key stakeholders to implement this vision in partnership with others. Inspire others to embrace their personal Jewish journeys utilizing both the specific framework of their camp and drawing on the organization’s resources for a holistic approach.
- Develop and implement a strategic business planning process for pipeline growth and program expansion with a commitment to and oversight of the highest standards of health, safety, and security; communicate vision and align key stakeholders.
- Lead, mentor, develop, and guide the camp’s senior management and staff. Lead the selection, training, coaching, and retention of full-time staff and summer counselors, specialists, international staff, and supervisors.
- Maintain a consistent presence as a leader within the camp community with respect to role modeling of institutional and racial equity, diversity, and inclusion (REDI) principles, Jewish values, supervision and accountability for all rules and procedures, and dedication in all respects to the URJ and camp’s mission and vision.
- Serve as a member of the URJ Camping System’s camping cohort and its national staffing team. Whenever possible, provide support and assistance to national efforts and initiatives of the URJ Camping System and the URJ in general, and play an active, visible role on the regional and national scene. This will include opportunities for professional development and training.
ENGAGEMENT & RECRUITMENT
- Create a programmatically inclusive and inspiring camp community where young people from a wide range of backgrounds (including the underrepresented identities noted above) explore and experience their Jewish identity while joyfully celebrating Jewish life; leverage the experiences and skills of clergy, Jewish educators, and URJ congregational resources.
- Develop and cultivate year-round relationships with families, campers, and the broader Reform Jewish community.
- Oversee the development and implementation of marketing strategies to prospective campers and their families. Execute these strategies to effectively transmit the value of Jewish camping and other URJ programs.
- Recruit and cultivate pipeline growth towards additional URJ engagement. Identify and develop young people from a wide range of backgrounds as leaders.
EXPAND & SCALE
- Develop and implement a strategic business planning process for program expansion into new summer and year-round markets.
- Enhance all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations—with the goal of creating a stronger brand.
- Build partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with regional funders and political and community leaders
- Publish and communicate program results as a model for regional and national replication.
- In partnership with the URJ operation teams, implement evaluation and measurement strategies.
SAFETY & SECURITY
- Demonstrate commitment to and oversight of the highest standards of physical and psychological health, safety and security, including identifying ways to address the oppression we know none of our camps are free from (racism, antisemitism, transphobia, ableism, etc.)
- Provide health center/medical management.
- Ensure compliance with the policies and standards of the URJ, local, state and federal laws, and the American Camp Association (ACA).
- Actively engage and energize the camp’s advisory board, volunteers, alumni, funders, clergy, educators, congregations, and partnering organizations.
- Cultivate donors, alumni and lay leaders as ambassadors and investors.
- Oversee and expand revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing and future program operations.
- Develop a funding model for financial sustainability.
- Steward and solicit donors.
- Raise awareness within the philanthropic and extended community about the value of Jewish camping and the URJ programming and needs.
RUN THE BUSINESS
- Ensure consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems.
- Oversee an approximately annual budget to accomplish the camp’s strategic direction and assure fiscal integrity.
- Work with the URJ to design and budget for new, improved, or enhanced buildings and grounds.
- Serve as liaison and key point person with relationship with the site where camp is housed each summer.

Being able to visualize the larger picture of where the camp is heading and identifying and prioritizing strategic objectives consistent with the vision of the organization are keys for success. Foster a welcoming and inclusive camp community where individuals from diverse backgrounds can explore Jewish concepts and values while joyfully experiencing Jewish life.
- Leadership & Supervision: Build and oversee a team from a wide range of backgrounds, who will foster a caring and inclusive camp community grounded in Reform Jewish and sustain cherished camp traditions. Ability to work independently or as a member of the team, ability to be detail-oriented and consistently accurate, ability to manage stress effectively in a fast-paced environment, and ability to quickly learn new processes and procedures. Select, evaluate, and supervise year-round staff, as well as oversee selection, retention, training, mentoring, assessment, and supervision of seasonal staff in partnership with full time camp team. This includes prioritizing the recruitment and affirming of staff from underrepresented backgrounds. Represent and champion camp to the larger Jewish community (in synagogues, JCCs, media outlets, etc.) and in the professional camping arena (through JCamp 180, Foundation for Jewish Camp, American Camping Association, local camp networks, etc.).
- Camping: Extensive experience in working with children, as well as arranging camp accommodations, meals, supplies, and equipment. Demonstrable experience as a camp director managing similarly structured camps. Advanced ability to hire, train, and oversee camp employees, as well as ensuring the camper and staff wellbeing.
- Operations and Risk Management: Manage and supervise the development and execution of program, including fiscal oversight, funding initiatives, and new partnerships. Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization. In-depth knowledge of activity-related safety regulations, as well as health and sanitation requirements. Ensure excellence at camp and that is providing the highest standards of health, safety, and security. Engage and regularly assess insurance to ensure adequate coverage for all contingencies. Ensure compliance with policies and standards of local, state and federal laws, and the American Camping Association.
- Creating Connections and Relationship Management: Impeccable skills in leveraging effective working relationships and influencing key stakeholders in support of business goals. Ability to create meaningful and authentic connections with all stakeholders – campers, staff, donors, alumnae, internal and external organizational partners. Work in partnership with colleagues to support URJ shared outcomes and purpose.
- Communication: Top-notch oral and written communication skills and using different forms of media. Ability to communicate vision of camp with all stakeholders. Able to communicate calmly and effectively during everyday operations and times of emergency. Working partnership with your MarComs team, develop and implement marketing strategies to prospective campers and their families as well as engaging current alumni families, with the goal of increasing the number of campers and participation in other URJ experience.
- Fundraising and Development: Oversee and expand fundraising activities to support program innovation and expansion, scholarship funds, and capital improvements. Keep abreast of grant opportunities and pursue them. Establish and build relationships with current and future donors. Work closely and collaboratively with camp’s advisory board and additional lay committees and engage in ongoing cultivation of prospective lay leaders.
- REDI Experience (Racial Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion). Demonstrated experience prioritizing and executing on Racial Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (i.e., ableism, LGBTQ+ Inclusion, antiracism, etc.) organizational priorities.
- Undergraduate degree in relevant field required, Master’s degree preferred
- 7+ years of senior leadership experience in overnight Jewish camping, or related fields.
- Must be in full-time residence at camp during the summer and must be able to travel up to 20 weekends per year.
- Working knowledge and/or ability to master office software applications including Microsoft 365, Salesforce and CampMinder.
