Who We Are

For 82 years, Camp Young Judaea in southern New Hampshire has provided a nurturing, residential summer camping experience where kids of all Jewish backgrounds feel free to be themselves, deepen both their Jewish knowledge and connection to Israel, and develop meaningful relationships that last a lifetime. We are more than a summer camp. We are a caring community grounded in the Jewish values of compassion, pluralism and menschlichkeit.

Our community is composed of

*400 campers largely from the eastern seaboard and their families –– at least 30% of our campers have a parent who went to CYJ
*Summer staff of 100 counselors –– 60% of whom are former campers and 30% are international
*20 summer administrators, specialists, and medical professionals –– all of whom are college graduates and some with 10+ years of experience at CYJ
*5 year-round staff (current configuration: f/t Director, f/t Director of Finance, f/t Director of Facilities, p/t Director of Camper and Alumni Engagement, p/t Director of Community Relations)
*4,000 active alumni –– many of whose children and grandchildren attend camp

At our 168-acre site on the shores of Lake Baboosic — fondly known as Baboo — we welcome children 8-15 years-old (completing grades 2-9) for 2-week, 3 ½ – week and 7-week sessions. Our oldest campers participate in a culminating, educational experience in Israel for 5 weeks and then return to camp “deep in the hills of New Hampshire” for 2 weeks of leadership training.

Camp Young Judaea is a private, independent, non-profit organization and is not affiliated with the Young Judaea movement or other camps with similar names. We are proud to be the original Camp Young Judaea.

The Executive Director Position

CYJ is shifting to a new model of leadership with an Executive Director at the head. As Executive Director, you will build on our successful summer camp program, plan for the future through strategic planning, develop new year-round programming, and engage with our loyal and passionate alumni and parent community. We seek an Executive Director who possesses the personal qualities, skills, and vision to reinvigorate CYJ’s influence in the Jewish camping world. You will have the full partnership of our highly motivated Board of Directors who are committed to creating a culture of philanthropy for CYJ. We expect that the Executive Director will become intimately acquainted with our traditions, our storied past, our multigenerational community of alumni, and our strong ruah and leverage these exceptional resources for camp’s promising future.

Responsibilities include:

Leadership
*Provide visionary leadership for the camp, ensuring the institution thrives and grows and achieves its mission with distinction
*Foster a welcoming and inclusive camp community where diverse individuals can explore Jewish concepts and values while joyfully experiencing Jewish life
*Select, assess, and supervise year-round staff, as well as oversee selection, retention, training, mentoring, assessment, and supervision of seasonal staff in partnership with senior administrators
*Work closely and collaboratively with CYJ’s Board of Directors and additional lay committees, and engage in ongoing cultivation of prospective lay leaders
*Represent and champion CYJ to the larger Jewish community (in synagogues, JCCs, media outlets, etc.) and in the professional camping arena (through JCamp 180, Foundation for Jewish Camp, American Camping Association, local camp networks, etc.)

Camp Program
*Build and oversee a team, who will foster a caring and inclusive camp community grounded in the Jewish values of compassion, pluralism and menschlichkeit, and sustain cherished camp traditions
*Ensure programmatic excellence at camp and for our Israel experience
*Ensure that CYJ is providing the highest standards of health, safety, and security
*Design and implement new off-summer programming that engages more stakeholders, drives new enrollment, and generates additional revenue
*Develop and cultivate close relationships with a diverse group of camper families, staff, alumni, board members, and friends of CYJ

Operations
*Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
*Engage and regularly assess insurance to ensure adequate coverage for all contingencies
*Ensure compliance with policies and standards of local, state and federal laws, and the American Camping Association
*Inventory buildings and grounds and create a strategic and systematic long range plan for maintenance and upkeep in partnership with the board and the Director of Finance

Marketing and Communications
*Oversee the development and implementation of marketing strategies to prospective campers and their families as well as engaging current alumni families, with the goal of increasing the number of campers outside of the alumni network
*Enhance all aspects of communications — from web presence to social media to external relations — with the goal of creating a stronger brand awareness
*Improve the frequency and quality of communications with camper families and stakeholders

Financial Planning and Development
*Oversee an annual budget of $2.5 m and assure fiscal integrity in partnership with the Board of Directors and the Director of Finance
*Develop a long range master site plan in partnership with the Board of Directors and the Director of Finance
*Oversee and expand fundraising activities to support program innovation and expansion, scholarship funds, and capital improvements.
*Keep abreast of grant opportunities and pursue them

Requirements

Qualifications, Skills, and Requirements:

*Minimum of two years of experience as full time Camp Director, or extensive experience as Assistant Camp Director or other equivalent role, with demonstrated experience in camper care and programming; summer staff recruitment, hiring, and supervision; and supervision of year-round staff
*Deep commitment to and understanding of the value of Jewish overnight summer camp
*Experience in non-profit or business management, including budgeting, organizational finances, and planning
*Experience with fundraising, including donor engagement, solicitation, stewardship, and recognition
*Professional demeanor with excellent communication skills to articulate CYJ’s mission to a wide variety of audiences
*Ability to travel regularly during the year for outreach, camper and staff recruitment, and engagement of all stakeholders
*Full-time residence at camp during the summer months and some of the shoulder season is required
*Masters degree in business, non-profit management, Jewish studies, or other pertinent field a plus
