Camp Mountain Chai is a premier Jewish summer camp nestled in the scenic beauty of the San Bernardino National Forest in Angelus Oaks, California. Position Summary:
Camp Mountain Chai is searching for dedicated individuals to join our team as seasonal Health Center Specialist for the summer season. As a Health Center Specialist, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the health and well-being of our campers and staff. This position is ideal for individuals with a strong background and/or interest in healthcare, nursing, or related fields, who are passionate about working in a camp setting and providing quality medical care. The Health Center Specialist will be responsible for managing the health center, coordinating medical staff schedules, and maintaining a safe and clean environment.

Job Responsibilities:
1. Responsibilities as Staff at Camp Mountain Chai:
• Participate in the mandatory pre-summer meeting, specialist orientation, and staff week.
• Attend regular supervisory meetings (one-on-ones) with the Directors.
• Assist with closing camp at the end of each session and summer.
• Assist with end-of-summer inventory for the health center.

2. Environmental Stewardship:
• Instill in campers and staff respect for nature and the environment.
• Lead by example in eco-friendly practices.
• Ensure campers and staff follow guidelines to prevent damage to camp property.
• Promote a clean and eco-friendly camp environment.

3. Communication:
• Maintain open and effective communication with the CMC full-time team, summer Leadership team, and fellow staff members.
• Attend walkie-talkie training to use communication devices effectively.
• Charge walkie-talkies nightly to facilitate communication within the Leadership team.
• Assist medical staff with documentation of Health Center visitors using the CampMinder database.
• Communicate with parents and guardians regarding camper-related medical updates.
• Immediately communicate with the Assistant Director for Health Center supplies or medical equipment needs.

4. Health and Wellness:
• Ensure the Health Center operates safely and in accordance with guidelines.
• Lead the day-to-day operations of the Health Center.
• Provide basic first aid when necessary, following camp health and safety policies.
• Refill the First Aid Kit weekly.
• Promote good hygiene practices and encourage campers to stay hydrated and eat nutritious meals.
• Document and report incidents or issues promptly by filling out accident/injury reports.

5. Group Dynamics:
• Foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity within campers.
• Build positive relationships with every camper who comes to the Health Center.
• Assist with resolving conflicts and create a supportive, respectful, and positive atmosphere.

6. Program Activity Leadership:
• Assist and support all-camp programs as necessary.

7. Camper Supervision and Safety:
• Maintain a high level of safety for all campers throughout the day and at the health center.
• Build positive relationships with all campers. Responsible for the health, safety, and happiness of campers always.
• Attend and actively participate in camp-wide safety and emergency response training sessions and protocols.

Physical Demands:
• The ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 35 pounds, such as coolers, medical equipment, and medical supplies.
• The ability to frequently stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, and crawl, especially when assisting campers with various activities.
• The ability to stand and walk for extended periods, often while leading campers on hikes, nature walks, and field trips.
• The ability to sit for extended periods, especially when instructing campers in arts and crafts, storytelling, and other sedentary activities.
• The ability to operate machinery and equipment, such as camp grills, canoes, and archery equipment, with proper training and safety precautions.
• The ability to work in a variety of environments, including indoors, outdoors, and in confined spaces, such as tents, cabins, and camp buses.
• The ability to work in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and sun exposure.
• Swim and/or pass a swim test to ensure the safety of campers during water activities.
• Maintain attention and high levels of energy or excitement for extended periods to keep campers engaged and entertained.
• Spend most of the time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions, including heat, humidity, and insects.
• Be able to bend, stretch, twist, or reach out to assist campers with various activities, such as tying shoelaces, helping with bathroom needs, and participating in physical games.

Compensation

$3,000 - $5,000

Requirements

Qualifications/Certifications: • Minimum age requirement: 21+. • Entering their senior year of college or equivalent. • Background in public health, healthcare, or related fields. • Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification. • Experience in caring for children and teens. • Organized with the ability to create and maintain systems. • Desire and ability to work with children and young adults in a camp setting. • Effective communication skills with campers, staff, and parents. • Willingness and ability to take full responsibility for the safety and security of campers. • Ability to accept guidance, constructive feedback, and support. • Ability to work with various staff members in a calm and collected manner.
