Calm, Cool and Collected Campers

In this session, we will focus on specific tools camp staff can use to encourage campers to be their authentic selves, manage stress, and express difficult emotions. We will use reflection tools to identify how campers’ strengths and interests can be used to motivate them as well as to help them feel safe and calm during difficult moments. We will practice some deep breathing and mindfulness exercises that can be easily used in camp settings and plan when we would use these tools throughout a camp schedule. We’ll explore the idea of creating a retreat or safe space, and brainstorm materials we would put in this space. Finally, we will introduce the concept of visuals; specifically to help campers plan what healthy options they can use for managing stress as well as visuals to guide staff on how they can most be helpful when a camper is distressed.
