Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps, a Reform Jewish residential camp in Southern California, is seeking a creative, relational and dedicated Assistant Director to join a fun team that creates the vision for and runs the operation of Camp Hess Kramer and Gindling Hilltop Camp.

For over 70 years, Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps have been providing life changing experiences for children and youth throughout Southern California and beyond. Our camp model is a combination of tradition and choice, allowing campers to fully experience the magic and growth of a summer camp adventure!

The Assistant Director will have a broad range of responsibilities and the opportunity to impact a caring and tightly-knit community each summer. The portfolio of the Assistant Director includes camper experience and programming, recruitment, retention and engagement of both returning camp families and families who are new to our community, recruiting, hiring, negotiating salary, and supervision of summer staff.
The Assistant Director will be based out of our downtown Los Angeles, CA office from September through the end of May and then must be in residence at our camps for the summer season. Currently our camps operate in Carlsbad, CA. There is travel outside of the Los Angeles Area for recruitment as well as evening and weekend events.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps are committed to the growth and development of all our employees. Each individual who works at camp comes with a different skill set as well as a desire to learn and grow in their own unique way. Camp responsibilities are divided between all members of the full-time staff to ensure that each is challenged while at the same time all responsibilities are fulfilled. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
-Assist in camper recruiting efforts, including congregational visits, home visits, and recruitment programs. The Assistant Director will travel and be expected to attend evening and weekend events.
-Assist the Director in assembling the summer staff, including but not limited to organizing the hiring process, interviewing potential staff, checking references, determining eligibility, tracking forms etc.
-Program Development: Assist in preparing the framework for programs and activities for the upcoming summer. Help to develop the staff training program.
-Digital outreach/in-reach: Oversee all social media platforms and manage the creation of digital content
-Recruitment events: Create new avenues to maintain community through events in different geographic locations.
-Maintain the camp’s website to ensure that its content is always current.
-Design and create the camp yearbook.
-Office Operations management: Coordinating summer transportation, managing partnerships with outside vendors, design and order merchandise

Summer Season:
-Camper care, experience and engagement
-Staff Training and Supervision
-Summer Operations management: logistics and communication with dining services, logistics planning and execution of Leadership and Mitzvah hikes and Leadership night, coordination and execution of beach days.
-Coordinate scheduling with rental site partners.
-Collection of photographs and other content for year-round usage.
-Implementation of the Camp’s policies and procedures as they affect summer staff.
-Manage camp when the Director is off the property.
-Oversee the supply procurement program for the camps.
-Be a point of contact for the camps with parents.

Must be willing to work outside of normal business hours as needed.

Compensation

$60-65K

Requirements

Your Qualifications: -Must have meaningful and varied experiences working with children and youth, and must have a strong understanding of child development. -Must have a background in the camping industry or related youth work, and informal Jewish Education. -Preferred 2 years of experience working full time in the field. -Professional interpersonal skills, communication skills, and public speaking skills for work with campers, parents, staff and lay leaders. -Highly organized and responsible and able to work on projects independently. -Computer literate and knowledgeable in operation of word processing, spreadsheets, and database programs including Google Suite. Skilled in the creation of internet communications. -Must be able to comfortably transverse the campgrounds including ½ mile to and from activity areas multiple times a day. -Must be able to pass an extensive background check.
