FJC Fellowship: Camp Partner Information

The FJC Fellowship is a paid, 21-month fellowship for recent college graduates seeking professional opportunities in the field of Jewish Camp. Fellows spend the summer working in a leadership role at a Jewish overnight or day camp.  Fellows spend the academic year working full-time at Foundation for Jewish Camp’s headquarters office in New York. Each Fellow will work on different projects at FJC, providing valuable support for field-wide initiatives, large-scale FJC programs, and organizational operations. Fellows will be supervised by senior FJC professionals, attend key meetings and events, and be exposed to the inner workings of a national non-profit organization. Individually and as a cohort, Fellows will have access to professional development opportunities and mentorship from Jewish camp professionals.

For this third cohort of the FJC Fellowship, we will be hiring 3 outstanding Fellows.  While each Fellows will have a distinct portfolio of work, based on their unique skills and interest areas, all Fellows have responsibility for supporting a variety of leadership, educational and inclusion programs for day and overnight camp staff and professionals, and the research, marketing and development efforts that enable those initiatives.

The Fellows’ application and Camp Directors’ reference forms are both due by [date] at [time] Pacific Time.

Applicants are encouraged to speak with camp leadership before applying to ensure the Fellowship (and this particular applicant) are a good fit for the camp organization and this particular opportunity right now.  More than one applicant from a camp may apply, though FJC may ask camp for additional guidance and perspective in these cases.

There will be 2-3 rounds of interviews for finalist candidates in early to mid-March, and applicants and camps will be informed of their selection by mid-April.

Camp Commitments

Fellows are full-time FJC employees for the entire 21-month Fellowship experience, including the months they are working at their Jewish camp. Interested camp partners must commit to the following in order to participate in the Fellowship program:

  • Hire the Fellow to work at camp for summer 2024, in a seasonal leadership role (e.g. unit leader, activity head, or other senior/supervisory position).*
  • Pay $6,000 to FJC to account for Fellow’s summer compensation, some pre-camp/year-round work, and program administration. Camps are not expected to compensate Fellows additionally for their work at camp during summer 2024.**
  • Cover the Fellow’s travel to and from camp (according to camp’s policy for all staff) and any year-round camp staff training gatherings they are required to attend.
  • Host the Fellow’s FJC supervisor for a visit to the Fellow at camp in summer 2024.
  • Allow the Fellow to participate in an FJC site visit of another Jewish camp in summer 2024 to expand their knowledge of and exposure to the broader field (separate from a day off from camp).
  • Semi-annual check-ins with the Fellow and their FJC supervisor to enhance the Fellow’s professional growth and continuity of professional development.

*Fellows are encouraged to work at camp in summer 2023 and/or summer 2025 if they desire, and a position is available. This time, however, is optional and outside of the formal framework of the Fellowship.

**The Fellows are considered full time FJC employees during the academic year, and it should not be assumed that they are available for project-based work for camp throughout the year. They are, however, welcome to work at camp’s year-round or shoulder-season programming (i.e. family camp, a camper reunion, a weekend recruitment fair, etc.), if it does not interfere with their FJC role and responsibilities. Fellows may be compensated separately for this work.

FJC Commitments

  • Fellows receive an annual, prorated salary of $50,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage; a company-paid Group Medical Bridge plan that provides additional out-of-pocket protection for a variety of medical services; commuter benefit; Flexible Spending Account; 401K plan; paid vacation annually (prorated for partial years worked); early closure for Shabbat and major holiday eves; and office closure for all major Jewish and secular holidays.
  • Professional development for the Fellows (attendance at conferences, training workshops, and mentorship from the field)
  • FJC will support the regular seasonal pre-camp work of Fellows within reason (e.g. attending leadership team pre-camp gatherings, allowing time to work on camp programming ahead of the summer, etc.)
