Introduction to a Trauma-Informed Approach: A Framework for Camp Orientation

Description

This session will introduce SAMHSA’s six key principles for a trauma-informed approach to working with individuals who’ve undergone adverse experiences. We will review and discuss these principles in the context of maintaining a trauma-informed disposition to notable behaviors in the camp setting. This session will pay attention to understanding how trauma impacts children from an attachment perspective and how these issues can be attended to broadly, without requiring camp staff to have any explicit psychotherapeutic engagement. We’ll discuss these constructs within the context of tikkun olam, repairing the world, attending to the ills of the world as a whole, offering both a generalized and systemic approach to recognizing and addressing trauma-exposed youth, discussing camper behaviors in an effort to raise awareness among camp staff.
